Large gall-like swellings distort the host thallus and contain pycnidia immersed in the galls. The conidiomata (blister-like fruiting structures) are pinkish-orange becoming browner. Conidia abundant, 7-10.5 x 4.5-6 Ám. The flat blackish-brown apothecia often form in groups, the spores simple, hyaline, (7-)8-11.5(-12) x 2.5-3.5(-4) Ám.

Similar: Diploschistes muscorum is initially parasitic on Cladonia spp.
