Widespread on calcareous soils in crevices associated with limestone, sometimes found directly on rock

A thick thallus of pale brown to dark brown, wavy-edged squamules (dull greenish when wet) with a dark undersurface. Apothecia are common, black or very dark brown, flat becoming weakly convex, the margins becoming excluded. Spores are ellipsoid, (8-)9-11(-15) x 6-8 µm.
