Species: Verrucaria hochstetteri

Growth type crustose. Chemical results: Negative
Common and widespread on hard limestone and mortar.

The smooth white to pale grey thallus has large, completely immersed perithecia (to 0.8mm diam) which leave conspicuous pits in the substrate, the perithecia usually falling out intact. Host to Opegrapha hochstetteri

Similar: V. baldensis. Smaller perithecia. Both species shown below.

N.B. Mark Powell: "V. hochstetteri, Thelidium incavatum, T. decipiens, Polyblastia dermatodes and P. albida are indistinguishable in the field"
